SoCal Lady Bloggers Spend an Evening With “The Bloggess”

I get asked all the time what the fascination is with blogging. For those people who don’t blog, tweet and Facebook, the question is difficult to answer. Bloggers are a unique demographic; it doesn’t matter how successful and well known they become, the majority of them are still down-to-earth, approachable, and could really become your next best friend. We can be competitive, but are always supportive.

Last week, I got a bunch of blogging friends together to go support one of our own. Jenny Lawson (The Bloggess) was in Los Angeles on her book tour for her memoir, “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened”. If you haven’t heard of the book (or Jenny, for that matter) then you are definitely not doing this whole blogging thing right. And if you haven’t read the book, what are you waiting for? Because as Jenny explained it, the paperback probably won’t be out anytime soon so you will definitely want to just go bite the bullet and buy the darn thing. It’s fabulous.

I’ve read lots of books from well-known bloggers and have been completely disenchanted. Just because you can write a great blog post doesn’t necessarily translate into a readable, full-blown 313-page book. The fact that Jenny’s book is 313 pages actually cracks me up because she is deathly afraid of the number 13. Go figure.

So we all sat in the audience as she read a chapter of her book and I’m pretty sure I had to wipe away the tears (of laughter) at least 5 times. Maybe more. Not only can she write a funny blog post, but the 313 pages she wrote for this book surpassed even her blog success. Damn she is funny. And enchanting. And I want her to be my crazy, best friend.

And this is why I love blogging so much. Spending an evening with a group of other bloggers, laughing, supporting, and promoting each other… it’s the most rewarding feeling. There really isn’t another medium where women from so many different types of backgrounds can come together and find common ground. If you haven’t found your blogging tribe yet, keep looking. There is one out there for everyone. It is SO worth it.
