Once upon a time, in a land far away, something magical happened. Actually… it happened on an ordinary day in a regular town. August 15th in Venice, California, to be precise. However, it was magical none the less. Why was this thing magical? Let me explain.
When people take priority in helping others, it is a very special occurrence indeed. In a world where the vast majority of people are so consumed by their own problems, any act of kindness toward another human is pretty amazing. When a whole group of people come together to use their powers for the sole purpose of spreading kindness and helping others, it is downright magical. And with the high school dropout number exceeding 1.2 million students per year, it is going to take some serious magic to fix.
School The Nation may look like just a social good campaign to increase awareness about the increasing number of high school dropouts, but it so much more. This initiative is the combined forces of P&G, Communities In Schools (CIS) and actor Matthew McConaughey’s Just Keep Livin’ foundation. These three entities have come together to mentor high school kids, offer mentorship programs in 14 states across the country and help kids see how important making good choices is to the outcome of their future. This in itself is pretty awesome.
This is where it gets really good….
The Procter & Gamble Company decided to invest in the future of our youth in connection to this initiative by making it truly simple for every consumer in the nation to help. GetGiveSave.com offers a whole list of products that we already use daily and will do amazing things besides just cleaning our laundry and giving us fresh breath:
1. For every $25 that you spend on P&G products, you will get a $5 rebate.
2. Then, P&G will donate another $5 to CIS to help sponsor mentorship programs.
It is a win/win scenario that helps everyone. See? I told you it was magical! You can learn more about the School The Nation campaign by visiting their Facebook page and following them on Twitter. Now get to the store and make some magic of your own happen!
Oh…and here is a gratuitous picture of Mr McConaughey that my friend Caryn Bailey took at the event. You are welcome!

*Bloggers, including myself, were provided with transportation to and from this event in exchange for our help in spreading the word about the initiative. We were also given yummy snacks and allowed to take a picture with his royal hotness, Matthew McConaughey.
